Cristobalite XRD Verification: An Incoming Inspection Guide for Buyers
A practical cristobalite incoming-inspection guide covering representative sampling, XRD phase verification, method records and hold-investigate decisions.

Incoming inspection · Phase identity
Cristobalite purchasing begins with phase identity. Appearance, whiteness and SiO₂ chemistry alone cannot demonstrate that a powder is cristobalite rather than quartz, fused silica or a mixed-phase material.
Why XRD Belongs in the Qualification Plan
Quartz, cristobalite and amorphous fused silica are all silica materials, but their crystal structures and thermal behavior differ. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is therefore an appropriate identity tool when a buyer must distinguish crystalline phases. The acceptance rule should be agreed before testing: qualitative confirmation, semi-quantitative comparison or a validated quantitative method are not interchangeable.

Sampling and Test Record
| Control point | Record | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lot sampling | Container count, locations, increment size and composite method | Makes the result representative |
| Specimen preparation | Grinding, packing, holder and orientation control | Limits preparation bias |
| Instrument method | Radiation, scan range, step/time and calibration | Supports repeatability |
| Interpretation | Reference pattern/database, analyst rule and uncertainty | Prevents unsupported percentage claims |

Pair XRD with Application-Relevant Checks
| Property | Typical decision question | Data boundary |
|---|---|---|
| PSD in μm | Will the powder disperse and meet surface/filtration needs? | Confirm by current TDS/COA |
| Whiteness / color | Does it fit the customer’s visual target? | Method and specimen preparation required |
| Moisture | Is storage or processing risk controlled? | Grade-specific |
| Finished formulation | Does the lot meet rheology, surface and durability targets? | Subject to customer trial |

Pass, Hold and Investigate
- Pass: identity, specified COA fields and application checks meet the approved plan.
- Hold: a required method, unit, limit or lot link is missing; request clarification before use.
- Investigate: the diffraction pattern differs from the approved baseline, or XRD and supplier identity conflict. Retest a retained sample and review sampling, preparation and reference patterns.

FAQ
Can XRF or ICP replace XRD?
No. Chemical analysis measures elemental composition; XRD identifies crystalline structure. They answer different questions.
Can peak height alone prove phase percentage?
Not reliably. Quantification requires a defined method, calibration/model, preparation controls and uncertainty statement.
