Cristobalite purchasing begins with phase identity. Appearance, whiteness and SiO₂ chemistry alone cannot demonstrate that a powder is cristobalite rather than quartz, fused silica or a mixed-phase material.
Why XRD Belongs in the Qualification Plan
Quartz, cristobalite and amorphous fused silica are all silica materials, but their crystal structures and thermal behavior differ. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is therefore an appropriate identity tool when a buyer must distinguish crystalline phases. The acceptance rule should be agreed before testing: qualitative confirmation, semi-quantitative comparison or a validated quantitative method are not interchangeable.

Pass, Hold and Investigate
- Pass: identity, specified COA fields and application checks meet the approved plan.
- Hold: a required method, unit, limit or lot link is missing; request clarification before use.
- Investigate: the diffraction pattern differs from the approved baseline, or XRD and supplier identity conflict. Retest a retained sample and review sampling, preparation and reference patterns.
