How to Compare Silica Powder Quotes by Landed Cost and Usable Tonne
Compare silica powder quotations by technical scope, Incoterms, freight, usable tonnes, handling loss and delivery risk before choosing a supplier.

Start with one approved technical basis
A low quote is irrelevant when it covers a different mineral phase, particle-size method, packing format or acceptance scope. Before comparing money, lock the material identity and the few properties that control your customer's process. For a 325-mesh request, for example, do not assume that every supplier uses the same sieve residue or laser-diffraction definition. Keep the approved grade, test method and units on the comparison sheet.
If the application accepts ground crystalline quartz, review the published General-Purpose Crystalline Silica Powder 325 Mesh page as a starting point. It is not interchangeable with fused silica or cristobalite simply because all three are silica materials.
| Item to normalize | What must match | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Material identity | Crystalline quartz, fused silica or cristobalite | Phase affects application fit; price comparison across phases is misleading. |
| Particle size | Method, units, sieve residue or D-values | A shared mesh label can hide different distributions and process behavior. |
| Lot evidence | Current COA fields, methods and lot linkage | An unsupported number has less purchasing value than a traceable result. |
| Packing | Net weight, bag or FIBC, pallet and liner | Packing changes payload, handling time, loss and warehouse requirements. |
| Trade term | Incoterms rule plus named place | The term allocates transport, risk, customs and selected insurance duties. |

Build the landed-cost equation line by line
Use the same currency, mass unit and delivery point for every offer. A practical worksheet can start with:
Do not add a cost twice. A CIF quotation, for example, already includes specified freight and insurance obligations, while a DDP quotation allocates more destination responsibilities to the seller. The exact named place still matters. ICC guidance should be used for the selected rule; the worksheet is not a substitute for a sales contract or customs advice.
Illustrative calculation—not a Changtong quotation
Assume 20.0 metric tonnes at USD 620/t, plus USD 3,100 for freight, insurance and destination handling. The pre-duty landed total is USD 15,500. If 2% of the shipment is held or lost through torn packs, contamination or unapproved material, usable mass is 19.6 t. The effective cost is USD 15,500 ÷ 19.6 = USD 790.82 per usable tonne. Replace every number with a forwarder's quote, customs estimate and your own historical loss rate.

Count the cost of an unusable tonne
The denominator is often more important than a small price discount. Record how many tonnes are released for production, not only how many tonnes appear on the bill of lading. Typical hold reasons include a missing lot link, damaged packaging, an out-of-agreement test method, moisture exposure, mixed labels or a result outside the approved specification.
Do not assign a generic rejection percentage to a new supplier. During qualification, keep the loss factor visible as a scenario: 0%, a planning case and a stress case. Replace the scenario with actual receiving data after repeat orders.
Put delivery reliability into the comparison
A distributor may lose more from a stockout than from paying several dollars more per tonne. Compare the complete cycle: sample approval, production lead time, document issue date, vessel or truck schedule, port variability and safety stock. Ask the supplier which stage is a firm commitment and which remains an estimate.
| Question | Evidence to request | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| Can the approved grade be repeated? | Grade code, agreed limits, current lot COA and change-notification route | Keep the same approval identity in the PO. |
| Is the lead time stable? | Production window, packing date and shipment milestone assumptions | Separate factory time from transit time. |
| Will a container maximize usable payload? | Bag net weight, pallet count, gross/net weight and load plan | Compare cost per delivered net tonne. |
| What happens after a hold? | Retain-sample, investigation and document-response process | Price the expected delay, not only replacement material. |
Use one quote-comparison rule
First reject offers that do not meet the technical and evidence gate. Then compare qualified offers by landed cost per usable tonne, delivery risk and working-capital exposure. The Silica Powder RFQ Checklist can help keep the original request consistent across suppliers.

FAQ
Should I compare FOB and CIF prices directly?
No. Convert both to the same named delivery point and add the costs and responsibilities that remain with the buyer.
Can I use quoted tonnes as the denominator?
Use delivered net tonnes for logistics analysis and usable released tonnes for process economics. Keep both visible.
Does a lower price justify a larger first order?
Not before the grade, application trial, packing and receiving controls are approved. A staged first order limits the cost of uncertainty.
